The town used to be easily accessible to the city of Kasur, Pakistan only 8 km away, and to Ferozepur 35 km away, but since India and Pakistan enacted border controls in 1953, the residents of the Khem Karan have been essentially cut off from both towns - Kasur lies in Pakistan, while the road to Ferozepur cuts through Pakistan, resulting in a detour of an extra 70 kilometre's drive. The towns Muslim residents migrated primarily to the city of Kasur, 8 km away in Pakistan. Many of the town's residents migrated from nearby villages in modern Pakistan between 19, such as Nathuwala, Qadiwind, Rohiwal, and Sehjra. It became a part of Amritsar district after the partition. It used to be in Lahore district before partition of India. Guru Tegh Bahadur (1621–1675) visited it. Peter Wilson states that the defeat of Pakistan Army in the battle of Asal Uttar was one of the greatest defeats suffered by Pakistan forces in the course of Indo-Pakistan war of 1965.Khem Karan is an old city. Philip Towle, regard the Indian resistance near Khem Karan as one of the key turning points of the war, one which tilted the balance of the war in favor of India. After the battle Indian army made attempts to take back lost territory in Khem Karan but met with no success. Factors that contributed to this were the conditions of the plains, better Indian tactics and a successful Indian strategy. The Indian troops retaliated, and after three days of bitter fighting, the battle ended with the Pakistani forces being repulsed near Asal Uttar. It was fought from September 8 through September 10, 1965, when the Pakistan Army thrust its tanks and infantry into Indian territory, capturing the Indian town of Khem Karan 5 km from the International Border. The Battle of Asal Uttar was one of the largest tank battles fought during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965.
